SELECTION PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Two criteria are used to determine whether or not a student is eligible for an invitation to apply for consideration for admission to the Florence-Carlton National Honor Society.

  1. The student must be in grades 10, 11, 12

  2. The student must have a minimum cumulative grade point average 3.25

Students who meet the criteria will be invited to apply for admission to the Society.  Those who elect to apply must obtain and complete a Student Activity Information Form and turn it in to the principal’s office by the established deadline.  Failure to submit the form by the deadline will be interpreted as an indication that the student does not want to be considered for admission to the Society.  A Faculty Advisory Committee, consisting of four-five faculty members selected by the principal will assemble the information, evaluate candidates and select new members of the Society.

Candidates will be evaluated in each of the following four areas:

  1. Scholarship – based on cumulative GPA

  2. Character – based on evidence of leadership roles in school and community

  3. Leadership – based on evidence of leadership roles in school and community

  4. Service and Activities – based on community service and other extra-curricular activities

Each candidate will be evaluated separately by each committee member and may receive a maximum of five points in each of the four categories.

Points will automatically be awarded for scholarship as follows:

                3.25 – 3.49          GPA       3 points

                3.50 – 3.749        GPA       4 points

                3.75 – 4.00          GPA       5 points

In each of the other three categories the committee members will award from zero to five points based on their interpretation of the information provided on the Student Activity Information Form and their personal knowledge of the candidate.  Committee members will disqualify themselves from the selection process in the case of students whom they do not feel they know well enough to score.  Scores will be averaged for each candidate, and those receiving an average composite score of at least 14.0 will be invited to be initiated into the National Honor Society.  Those who do not average 14.0 can meet with the advisor to discuss alternative/delayed acceptance into NHS.
